How does check processing work?

Check processing is the procedure used to deposit and credit the funds from a check into a bank account.

If the issuer’s account lacks sufficient funds, the check may be declined (bounced check), and fees could apply to both the issuer and/or the recipient.

What are the features and benefits of check processing?

To be valid, a check must include:

  • The amount (written in words and figures),
  • The date,
  • The issuer’s signature,
  • The beneficiary’s details.

Checks are typically processed on the day of receipt at the processing center. Once sent for interbank clearing, account crediting generally occurs 11 days after submission (D+11, where D is the interbank submission date).

The benefits of check processing include:

1

Simplicité et accessibilité

Checks are easy to use and widely accepted.

2

Traceability

Checks provide a written record of transactions, helpful for financial records and audits.

3

Flexibility

Checks allow for deferred payments, offering some flexibility in cash flow management.
